False Sunflower is a 3' to 6' tall native perennial with 3" wide golden yellow flowers and is similar in appearance to the true sunflowers. False Sunflower is an early summer flowering plant tolerating dry or moist soils and preferring full sun sites. Unlike the true sunflowers, the ray flowers of False Sunflower produce seed. It is easy to establish from seed. Its drought tolerance and adaptation to dry to moist sites and a wide range of soil types makes this plant attractive to gardeners and wildlife habitat managers. It is also a really good cut flower. Deer eat the leaves and the seed is so favored by birds it is difficult to get a seed harvest before the birds devour the crop.
