Smooth Aster (Symphyotrichum laeve)
Smooth Aster is a 2' to 3' tall native perennial. It grows well in dry to medium well drained soils in full sun but will tolerate more damp sites in partial shade. The large showy blue flowers may remain until the plant is frost killed in late October or November. With showy flowers lasting long after most other flowers are gone, this plant is essential for serious gardeners. Smooth Aster is usually found in grasslands, open woods, and woodland edges. The foliage is browsed by deer, especially early in the year. It attracts insects important to young quail and turkey and it attracts numerous pollinator species.
